At that time 200 students were pursuing the M.B.B.S course from there. So the Government of Tripura decided to run the college through a society and registered a society in the name and style of " Society for Tripura Medical College" on 23 May 2009.

The Tripura Medical College and Dr. BRAM Teaching Hospital is situated at Hapania, West Tripura, which was once a small village and is about 7 KM away from Agartala. The area is now included under the Agartala Municipal Corporation.

Initially, there was a State level Hospital here. Later, the State Government decided to establish a Medical College taking the said Hospital as Teaching Hospital and accordingly in the year 2005, on the approach of the State Government, the Global Educational Net (GENET) came forward and established a Medical College in PPP Model with intake capacity of 100 students in 1st year MBBS course with teaching hospital of 300 beds. The State Government provided GENET 25 acres of land and also allowed GENET to utilize existing State hospital as its teaching hospital.

Thus the medical establishment was set up with three institutions viz. Tripura Medical College (TMC), Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital (BRAM Teaching Hospital) and Tripura College of Nursing (TCN) and run as privately managed institutions on Public-Private Partnership Model by an agreement between the State Govt. and GENET, a company incorporated under the Companies Act.

But due to the reasons best known to them, GENET suddenly withdrew from the deal after few years and consequent to that, the State Government had no other alternative but to handover the management of the institutions to a Society named \93Society for Tripura Medical College & Dr. BRAM Teaching Hospital\94 (registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860) with effect from 23-5-2009 after rescinding all Agreements with the GENET authority by the State Government. Thereafter, the MCI has given recognition of the College for 5 (five) years in the year 2011 with intake capacity of 100 MBBS students. The next MCI inspection is expected in the year 2016.

Recent Development

Subsequently, after certain years of management by the Society, the status of the institutions was called into question in the High Court of Tripura in W P (C)(PIL) 03 of 2014 and by the judgment and order dated 30-4-2015 the High Court of Tripura declared the institution as State Controlled, not private institutions. Appreciating the stand of the State Govt. that it was not in a position to take the financial burden of running another Medical College in the State, the High Court directed the State Govt. to re-constitute the Society with majority private members who do not hold any official position under the Government and then handover management of institutions to the Society to make the status of the institutions as privately managed one.

Reconstituted Society

Accordingly, in terms of the above directions of the High Court, the Society has been re-constituted and the re-constituted Society has agreed with the State Government to take over management of the institutions and run the same as privately managed Institutions;vide order of Government of Tripura No.F.2-6770/RS/TRIP/COOP/2009/7381-82 dated 10-07-2015. The Society has been re-constituted on 10th May,2018;vide order of Government of Tripura No.F.3(2-304)-PLAN/DHS/2009-10.

The present Society manages its activities through different bodies constituted as under:
