About Us

The Tamil Nadu Medical Council is a statutory body formed under the provisions of the Madras Medical Registration Act of 1914. On 12th May,1914, the Madras Medical Council was started before the First World War by then Governor-General for the Madras Presidency.

The office of the Madras Medical council had its office in the office of the Surgeon-General at the Madras Medical College. The council then covered the state of Madras, comprising of Andhra, Karnataka, Kerala along with Pondicherry. After functioning at the office of the Surgeon-General, Madras Medical College, Madras, from 1915 to 1922, this Council later had its own separate office at various places. The Council bought its own office at Vadapalani and was operating from there for a long time.

The then Surgeon-General Dr W.B.Bannerman was the first person to register in the Madras Medical Council on 31.10.1915 and he later became the first President of the Madras Medical Council.

The present office is at 914, Poonamalle High Road Arumbakkam, Chennai was inaugurated on 29.11.2011 by the then Honourable Chief Minister Dr. Jayalalitha.

The present office has a neat and friendly ambience and has its office and the Council hall in its premises. The records are all computerized and the data are stored in safe custody. The RMP's once complete the course apply on-line, get an appointment, visit office and get their registration done in 3-4 hours. Keeping pace with the technology, the Council is in the process of updating its software and security.

The TN Medical Council caters the registrations of those RMP's practicing or completing their study in the state of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The Council imparts medical ethics to the RMP's and ensures scientific practice by them. The Council has also issued notification to implement the clause 1.2.3 of the Code of Professional Conduct, Ethics and Etiquette Regulations issued by the Medical Council of India and has thus directed all the RMP's under its jurisdictions to update their knowledge by way of Continuing Medical Education (CME). To facilitate the RMP's in the process, the Council has also accredited about 250 organizations to conduct CME's. In addition, to enable practitioners from studying from their home, the Council has approved Omnicuris – for providing online courses. The Council is also in the process of starting its own online courses.

The TNMC has the reputation of being run by democratically held elections once in 5 years. Seven elected members from the registered RMP's and three nominated members from the Govt. of Tamilnadu run the Council. The PresidentVice-President and Executive Committee members are elected amongst them.

From the 1st registration (Dr Bannerman) to 1,40,000 doctors have been registered in the council till July 2019. The RMP's and medical graduates completing courses in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala are now governed by their own state medical councils. They were separated from the TNMC subsequent to the formation of respective states.

The Tamil Nadu Medical Council functions as the state unit of Medical Council of India (MCI) since 1956 based on the Indian Medical Council Act 1956. (the MCI was formed in 1936). The state medical councils do all the work of MCI except medical education. The registration and licensing, Disciplinary authority on misconduct, and facilitating knowledge by holding CME's are the main work of state councils.

The medical education is dealt directly by the MCI to ensure uniformity and quality in medical education.

  • The Tamil Nadu Medical Council do the registrations and issue license to the Medical practitioners who possess qualifications recognised by the Medical Council of India, New Delhi.
  • It is also responsible for maintaining the professional conduct and discipline of the Medical practitioners registered in this Council and publishing the Medical Registers every year
  • This Council issues Provisional, Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate Registration Certificate, No Objection Certificate and Certificate of Good standing and CME certificates.
  • The Medical Council Awards were constituted in 2012 on the lines of BC Roy awards given by MCI. The first ''Awards Function " is held in the office of the Council on 1st July 2013.
  • The 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 awards were given by the then Honourable Governors of Tamil Nadu.
