We possess within us two minds. So far I have written only of the conscious mind. I would now like to introduce you to your second mind, the hidden and mysterious subconscious. Our subconscious mind contains such power and complexity that it literally staggers the imagination.

The foundation stone of this prestigious institution of western U P catering for the health needs of the western U P including the hilly region, now separate as Uttrakhand state, was laid on 13th September 1963 by the, then Hon’ ble Chief Minister of U P Late Shri Chandra Bhanu Gupta ji & named after Lala Lajpat Rai, the Lion of Punjab, one of the well known freedom fighter. A special mention about Dr. Kailash Prakash ji, the then MLA, deserves to be mentioned, as it was due to his constant efforts, the college could be established at Meerut. The first batch comprising of 58 undergraduate medical students was admitted in August 1966. In 1968 the intake capacity of the institution was raised to 100.

Apart from this, 50 students of M.L.B. medical college, Jhansi were also admitted in this institution from 1968 to 1970. In 1971 these students were transferred to Jhansi. Subsequently from 1971 to 1976, 50 students of the University College of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, were also trained in this institution & were transferred back to Delhi in 1976 when U.C.M.S. started functioning. The college building was formally inaugurated by his Excellency Dr. B. Gopala Reddy ji on 28th January. 1969, the birth anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai. The foundation stone of the associated teaching hospital, named after the famous Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel was laid by the then Chief Minister of U.P., Hon’ble Chaudhary Charan Singh ji on 31st Oct. 1967, the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. The hospital building was completed and became functional with 1040 beds subsequently, was formally inaugurated by the then Hon'ble Health Minister of U. P. Sri Prem Chand Sharma ji on 30th January 1972.

The SVBP Hospital has OPD in all clinical specialities & super-specialities in Endocrinology, Cardiology, and Neurosurgery. It is fully equipped with modern diagnostic facilities in Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Radiology department. Besides the Radiology department, Radio diagnosis department is aided by a private centre NMC, established by NGO where the facilities of CAT Scan & MRI Scanning are also available for patient care & training of post graduate students. The Ophthalmology department is an upgraded department in this hospital with facility of Eye Bank, LASER, Retina clinic, Glaucoma clinic, Paediatric Ophthalmology and low vision aid clinic. The hospital also has an Emergency ward with best of equipments & facilities to deal with any emergency situation round the clock.

The Hospital also has four story modern operation theatre block which has 14 operation theatres with central supply of Gas & Oxygen. The construction of major lecture theatre is in full swing and will be ready shortly. The construction of new computerized record section is complete and is functioning.

The Academic block of the college has separate five story building. The Principal cum Dean's office & general administrative block is situated on ground floor along with the Department of Anatomy. The first floor has two pre- clinical departments of Physiology & Biochemistry. Pathology and Microbiology departments are on 2nd floor, Pharmacology on the 3rdfloor & Community Medicine & Forensic Medicine departments are on the 4th floor of the academic block. Besides this, there is a separate block for department of Pharmacy for teaching & training of Pharmacy students in diploma course. There are five lecture theatres for teaching all disciplines, three of them are in academic block on ground, first & second floors, one lecture theatre is in pharmacy department & fifth one is in front of Pharmacy department. Each lecture theatre has a seating capacity of about 150 students and equipped with latest audiovisual aid.

The residential complex of the medical college is one of the biggest in the state comprising of 150.49 acres of land & has residential facility for 115 teachers, 650 undergraduate students, 210 post graduate students, 225 paramedical personnel, 392 Employees & 100 Trainee Nurses.

The atmosphere in campus is environment friendly with beautiful trees and flower beds and was planned by the then curator of Taj Gardens, Agra and the founder Principal, Dr. G.K. Tyagi. Today it is one of the best medical college campus in state of U.P.

The post graduate courses in most of the subjects were started as early as 1974 and today we have degree and diploma courses in all subjects and a super speciality course in Endocrinology.

This medical college was entrusted to conduct the post graduate entrance examination and DM, M.Ch. Entrance examination of U.P. in 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007. The college has always been in the forefront of academic activities & organized scores of conferences and C.M.E. programmes in various disciplines. The number of research papers published in national and international journals from this college exceeds thousand in number. The college receives many research grants from various national and international organizations.

In the last two year a number of new medical equipments have been added in different specialities and most of them have already started functioning. Many more are in the process of procurement. New look is being given to Hospital through repair and renovation work specially that of emergency, ICU and ISU. The academic wing is also improved through modernization of all lecture theatres with modern audio-visual facilities. A new histology lab will also start functioning in near future. The student hostels and play ground are also under renovation. Many young and energetic faculty members have recently joined the institution. All these will certainly give the institution a bright look.

Facilities going to be added in near future are new modern emergency with modular Operation Theatres, new computerised record section, new Ophthalmic wing as centre of excellence, new gymnasium, a modern neurosciences super speciality along with TELEMEDICINE. This will definitely have great impact on better patient care and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Dermatology Venerology & Leprosy - DDVL is a PG Diploma course.

The programs intends to impart to the postgraduate student, professional competence in diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted diseases, common skin diseases, cosmetic dermatological diseases and leprosy independently. Graduant must independently be able to attend medical emergencies related to skin, venereal diseases and leprosy and adopt preventive measures at individual and community levels against communicable and non-communicable venereal diseases, skin diseases, leprosy and other such ailments. They should be qualified with skills to impart necessary knowledge and laboratory skills to other medical or paramedical faculties. They should also be able to observe the basic responsibilities and duties discharged unto him as a professional with compassion and sense of justice.

PG Diploma in Ophthalmology – DO is a PG Diploma course offered.

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (Latin: Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae; abbreviated in many ways, most commonly MBBS, but also MB ChB, BMBS, MB BCh, MB BChir), is the primary medical degree awarded by medical schools in countries that follow the tradition of the United Kingdom. The historical degree nomenclature states that they are two separate undergraduate degrees. In practice, however, they are usually combined as one and conferred together, and may also be awarded at graduate-level medical schools.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), is a professional degree in medical science. A person holding the MBBS degree becomes a certified medical practitioner. The duration of MBBS course is five years and six months including one year of rotational internship at hospitals, health centres, and health camps organised by non-profit organisations (NGOs). MBBS course syllabus includes studies on anatomy, pharmacology, pathology as well as community health & medicine, paediatrics, and surgery. The syllabus, prescribed in such a way that MBBS degree holders can choose a specialisation for further majoring and practising medicine. The career specialisations for MBBS students are Nephrology, Cardiology, Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Organ Transplant, Endocrine, and General Surgery, etc.

MD - Anaesthesiology

The purpose of PG education is to create specialists who would provide high quality health care and advance the cause of science through research & training. A post graduate specialist having undergone the required training in anesthesiology should be able to recognize the health needs of the community. He or she should be competent to handle effectively medical problems and should be aware of the recent advances pertaining to his/her specialty. She/he should be highly competent anesthesiologist with broad range of skills that will enable him/her to practice anesthesiology independently. The PG student should also acquire the basic skills in teaching of medical/para-medical students. She/he is also expected to know the principles of research methodology and modes of consulting library. She/he should attend conferences, workshops and CMEs regularly to upgrade his/her knowledge. The purpose of this document is to provide teachers and learners illustrative guidelines to achieve defined outcomes through learning and assessment. This document was prepared by various subject-content specialists. The Reconciliation Board of the Academic Committee has attempted to render uniformity without compromise to purpose and content of the document.
