The Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) is a premier state funded medical college and hospital located in Porompat, Imphal East, Manipur. It was established in 1989 as Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, commonly referred to as JN Hospital. It has 21 departments, with the addition of a separate Dental College in 2017. As of May 2019, there have been 11 academic batches, nine of the MBBS course and two of the BDS course.

About JNIMS     

JNIMS Society was first registered on 18th December, 2007 vide registration no.312/M/SR/2007 under the Presidentship of Hon'ble Chief Minister, Manipur
The College got official permission for admission of 100 students for MBBS course on 14th July, 2010 vide No.MCI-No.34(41)/2010-Med/907. Finally, recognition for 100 MMBS seats was granted on 17th April, 2015 vide Ministry of Health and Family Welfare notification No. U.12012/224/2015-ME(P.II) 

The College has already started PG course in 7 different pre and Para-clinical departments. We have also applied for opening PG Course in 6 different para-clinical and clinical departments for which permission is being awaited. The institution have also applied for openings BDS course for which inspection is expected to take place very soon. A number of CME's workshops and conferences are being conducted by different departments at different times during the last one year. The first ever journal of JNIMS Academic Society ASJ is being released on 18th December, 2016. The new administrative and faculty block has been inaugarated by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Manipur on 30th November, 2016. 

The newly inaugaurated block houses not only administrative and faculty section but also central library, one examination hall of 300 seating capacity, 3 lecture halls of 180 each, two common rooms and one lecture theatre of 450 seating capacity. At present, construction is underway for a new 40 bedded ATC, 150 capacity resident doctor's hostel, 16 nos. of Professor apartment. Process is also on for construction of a 120 bedded new Obstetrics & Gynaecology ward. The construction of operation theatre block having 7 new operation theatres including 2 modular O.T. is nearing completion. 

We have already started many speciality clinics like Spine clinic, knee clinic, CTEV clinic,Urology clinic, Neosurgery clinic, Paediatric Surgery, Oncology Clinic, Cardiology clinic, Diabetic Clinic, Thyroid Clinic, Gastroenterology clinic, Pain clinic etc., for providing better patient care services. The Institute has also frame a scheme for providing free treatment to socio-economically backward patients (MSEP). So far, 25 number of patients have been given free treatment unde the scheme with financial contributions from benevolent donors. One artificial limb has also been donated. In the ATC we are providing free life saving medicines from 8pm to 8am. Free cochlear implant have been given to 22 number of children ( below 5 years). The hospital has 591 beds, out of which 541 are teaching beds and rest 50 are non teaching beds. In the last one year 2,73,941 number of patients attended OPD and 20,805 patients were admitted. 6,466 major surgeries and 22,585 minor surgeries were performed during the period.

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (Latin: Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae; abbreviated in many ways, most commonly MBBS, but also MB ChB, BMBS, MB BCh, MB BChir), is the primary medical degree awarded by medical schools in countries that follow the tradition of the United Kingdom. The historical degree nomenclature states that they are two separate undergraduate degrees. In practice, however, they are usually combined as one and conferred together, and may also be awarded at graduate-level medical schools.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), is a professional degree in medical science. A person holding the MBBS degree becomes a certified medical practitioner. The duration of MBBS course is five years and six months including one year of rotational internship at hospitals, health centres, and health camps organised by non-profit organisations (NGOs). MBBS course syllabus includes studies on anatomy, pharmacology, pathology as well as community health & medicine, paediatrics, and surgery. The syllabus, prescribed in such a way that MBBS degree holders can choose a specialisation for further majoring and practising medicine. The career specialisations for MBBS students are Nephrology, Cardiology, Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Organ Transplant, Endocrine, and General Surgery, etc.

MD - Anaesthesiology

The purpose of PG education is to create specialists who would provide high quality health care and advance the cause of science through research & training. A post graduate specialist having undergone the required training in anesthesiology should be able to recognize the health needs of the community. He or she should be competent to handle effectively medical problems and should be aware of the recent advances pertaining to his/her specialty. She/he should be highly competent anesthesiologist with broad range of skills that will enable him/her to practice anesthesiology independently. The PG student should also acquire the basic skills in teaching of medical/para-medical students. She/he is also expected to know the principles of research methodology and modes of consulting library. She/he should attend conferences, workshops and CMEs regularly to upgrade his/her knowledge. The purpose of this document is to provide teachers and learners illustrative guidelines to achieve defined outcomes through learning and assessment. This document was prepared by various subject-content specialists. The Reconciliation Board of the Academic Committee has attempted to render uniformity without compromise to purpose and content of the document. Compromise in purity of syntax has been made in order to preserve the purpose and content. This has necessitated retention of “domains of learning” under the heading “competencies”
