North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) is a medical institute of India in Shillong, Meghalaya. It is located on the outskirts of the educational hub hills City of the Northeastern India, Shillong, the "Scotland of the East". The present full-fledged tertiary care hospital facilities started at its permanent campus at Mawdiangdiang, Shillong in the year 2007. It is an Autonomous Institute under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India in 1987 and declared as "Centre of excellence" by the parliament of India. (1) The MBBS teaching programme of NEIGRIHMS started in 2008 with intake of 50 (fifty) students, followed by Post graduate courses in the following 4 subjects - Anaesthesiology, Microbiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Pathology in the year 2009. Further PG courses have been started in the following subjects - Anatomy, General Medicine, General Surgery and Radiodiagnosis and Imaging. The Institute also offers DM course in Cardiology. Besides, there is B. Sc Nursing and M. Sc Nursing courses (annual intake of 50 seats in B.Sc and 10 seats in M.Sc) being run by the Institute's College of Nursing.The College of Nursing started its courses from the year 2006.

The Institute was formally inaugurated and dedicated to the nation on 5 March 2010 by the chairperson of the UPA government, Smt Sonia Gandhi, the institute functioned from its present campus at Mawdiangdiang for some years before that.

NEIGRIHMS is not only an educational institute that imparts postgraduate medical training and undergraduate medical training, but also a working hospital that provides inexpensive medical care to patients. The institute is established on the lines of AIIMS, Delhi and PGIMER Chandigarh, to provide tertiary care to the people of North-East India.

The institute is named after (L) Smt.Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India.

NEIGRIHMS offers services in specialties like General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, E.N.T., Pediatrics, Urology, CTVS, General Medicine, Blood Bank, Pathology, Biochemistry, etc.

MD & MS Course started in initially in 4 disciplines affiliated to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) (A central University). The approval to start the Post Graduate course in NEIGRIHMS was conveyed by the Ministry vide Office Memorandum No-U-12012/7/2008-NE dated 19 May 2008. After inspection under the Chairmanship of Dr. A.K Agarwal, Add. Director General, DGHS, the Ministry vide letter No.U-12012/7/2008-NE (Pt) dated 19 March 2009 permitted to start Post Graduate Courses with two seats each in 4 (four) departments namely Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology and Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

Clinical services offered

The hospital complex consist of Out patient department (OPD) which provides various services to the people in an out-patient settings via different departments, and an In-Patient department (IPD) which is for patient admitted under various departments. There is availability of Intensive Care Units (ICUs), two Operating Theatre (OT) complexes as well as the Emergency Room which is available round the clock.

There are facilities like MRI, Ultrasound, Doppler, Echocardiography, Gastro-endoscopy etc. In the surgical discipline there are facilities like Total hip and knee Joint replacement, Arthroscopy, X-ray guided orthopaedic fracture surgery, Laparoscopic Surgeries, Bronchoscopy, and FESS. PTCA and CABG bypass procedures are available for coronary artery diseases. Closure of a congenital hole in heart (ASD/VSD/PDA) surgery are done as well. It has a blood bank with component separation facility like fresh frozen plasma, platelet concentrate etc.

Facility for marginalized people and weaker and vulnerable section

The hospital offers free treatment to patients having a BPL Card from the state government. Being a central government funded hospital NIAF or Rashtryiya Arogya Nidhi scheme can offer treatment/drugs/implants etc. free of cost. JSY or Janani Suraksha Yojna offers money to all mothers delivering babies in NEIGRIHMS Hospital for mother and child care. Free vaccination according to the national immunization programme is provided in paediatric OPD. Facility of superspeciality care like Cardiology, Urology, Nephrology etc. are also available here. A Bank of Baroda branch with an atm and an India Post office is available within the premises.

Campus

The campus is located in a hilly terrain, on the outskirts of Shillong. There is availability of undergraduate MBBS hostels for both boys and girls, Nurses hostel, Quarters for professors and teachers along with a Guest House with 12 rooms. An indoor stadium for daily recreation and sports such as basketball, volleyball, badminton is available in addition to a tennis court and a swimming pool are also available within the campus.

A central library with a vast collection of medical books and journals along with internet connectivity, photocopy and printing facilities are available to everyone in the campus.

Education

50 Students are admitted every year for the undergraduate course of MBBS from 8 north eastern states and from All India quota after qualifying NEET UG. Also doctors get admitted in various departments of the institute for postgraduate courses after qualifying NEET PG. A seat for Cardiology superspeciality is filled every year from NEET SS

B.Sc. Nursing and M.Sc. Nursing courses are also available under NEHU. Entrance exams are conducted by the institute every year.

The institute is located on a campus at Mawdiangdiang on the outskirts of Shillong (also called New Shillong nowadays), about 8.7 km from Shillong city and takes about 40 minutes to drive to. The best way to reach NEIGRIHMS is from the Police bazar through Polo Bazar- NEEPCO Office - Demseiniong - Nongmynsong - Project Setuk HQ-NEIGRIHMS, Mawdiangdiang.

Transport

City buses, Supplementary State Transport (Tata Magic) and cabs(Maruti 800 and Alto) ply at intervals from various places of Shillong to Mawdiangdiang.

Achievements

The hospital was adjudged the cleanest hospital/institute(Group 'B') in India for the year 2017-2018 under Kayakalp Scheme of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and was awarded the 1st prize money of ₹1,50,00,000 for it.

Director’s Message

NEIGRIHMS was established by the Government of India in 1987. It has been designed as a Postgraduate Medical Institute in lineage of AIIMS, New Delhi and PGIMER, Chandigarh. It is the First Postgraduate Medical Institute in the North Eastern Region and the Third in the Country established by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The Institute was registered as a Society on 12th January 1987 by the Registrar of Societies, Meghalaya, Shillong under the name of :
“North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences”.
               On January 22, 2000, then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee declared NEIGRIHMS as an ‘Institute of National Importance’. The Institute was also declared as an “Institution of Excellence” by an Act of Parliament vide Gazette of India Notification dated 4th January 2007, the only Medical Institute that has been given such a status in the country.
               North Eastern region has got a population of about 40 million in an area of about 2.6 Lakh square kms covered by about 400 hospitals where doctor population ratio is approximately 1: 5000 against a national figure 1:2000, with an overall 50% deficiency in medical manpower and overall 60% in total health sector. NEIGRIHMS has been envisaged as the most vital asset to address the shortage in the North Eastern Region in terms of Health care delivery as well as Human Resource Development.

               Destined  to be the “Pride” of North Eastern Region, NEIGRIHMS as the “Island of Excellence” bears the mission of an apex coordination centre to guide the health care policy of the Central Government, to potentially coordinate with  international health organizations like WHO, UNICEF, World Bank etc in the activities of health sector with a Vision of developing an apex seat of learning  cum health care and capacity building as also to develop a self- sustainable resource centre of Health and Medical Sciences through the trinity of training, services and research.

               NEIGRIHMS had started the Undergraduate Programmes (MBBS Course) since 2008, Postgraduate Programmes (MD/MS Course) in various departments of Anaesthesiology, Pathology, General Medicine, General Surgery, Microbiology, Gynae and Obstetrics, Anatomy, Radio diagnosis and Imaging since 2009 and Post-Doctoral Programme (DM Cardiology) since 2012. The B. Sc Nursing course was started by the Institute in 2006. The Institute conducts its own professional examinations and entrance examinations for these courses.   

               Academic Council of NEIGRIHMS has approved the introduction of Post Graduate/ Post Doctoral Fellowship Programmes in the near future in the disciplines of Cardio Vascular Thoracic Surgery, Urology and Renal Transplant, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine Rehabilitation, Emergency Medicine and Trauma, Radiation Sciences, Medical Oncology, Clinical Haematology and Transfusion Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Clinical Biochemistry, Community Medicine etc.

               Since its inception in 1998 and a modest beginning of the In-patient services in 2001 with only 30 beds, NEIGRIHMS has come a long way to the present 531 beds with an annual patient load of 2,26,308 Out-patients and 15568 In-patients  in the year 2013-14. As on date the institute is conducting High End diagnostics and medicare in Interventional Cardiology, Open Heart Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Minimal Access Surgery and Hybrid Procedures and Endovascular Interventions with CT- Guided Interventional Radiology besides Operating Microscopes, ECMO, video-endoscopic, laparoscopic facilities in General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Critical Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Resuscitation, Urological Surgery besides State-of-the-Art medicare in all other specialties like Joint  Replacements, Arthroscopy, GI Endoscopy, Laser Photo Coagulation, Immuno-histochemistry.

The only Institute to have State-of-the-Art Viral Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) in the North East Region besides high end Molecular Pathology Laboratory from the Department of Pathology. Component Transfusion, Hemodialysis, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and advanced research in Basic and Para-Clinical Sciences, more importantly extending the benefits of primary and high end care to the most remotely placed population at their door steps through outreach camps with the help of Community Medicine.

      NEIGRIHMS is conducting Clinical Grand Rounds/Clinico-Pathological Conferences, national/international conferences, symposia, workshops, teleconferences, tele-medicine in collaboration with other institutes in the country,  involving various other funding agencies for research,  especially ICMR, HRD, DST, DBT, etc.

               Various expansion Projects in the pipeline are separate Medical College, Nursing College complex, Regional Cancer Center with the State- of-the-Art infrastructure, Regional Trauma Center, Institute of Paramedical Sciences and Technology,College of Dental Sciences, Separate Super Specialty Blocks for Cardiac Sciences and Neuro Sciences, Separate Block for Maternal and Child Health, Department of Genetic and Molecular Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center, Department of Geriatric Medicine, Helipad and State-of-the-Art Air-Ambulance and Command and Control Room.

               On the Bio Medical Engineering front, NEIGRIHMS is focusing on creation of research areas for applied sciences to look after its own bio medical equipment and maintenance of engineering facilities and introduce Bio-medical Engineering Courses in due course of time.

               With Post Graduate/Post Doctoral teaching facilities in 35 disciplines along with its 531 bed capacity and 75 Intensive Care beds, Ace Trauma and Emergency Medicine Services, 350-bedded Regional Cancer Centre plus separate Medical and Nursing Colleges and College for Pharmacy and Dental Sciences, Patient Rest House, Helipad, Air Ambulance to air lift and in transit management of seriously sick /injured patients from far flung hilly areas of North East, better road connectivity with the Shillong by-pass, this Institution is on its way to be the major Referral Regional Centre with State-of-the-Art facilities for Medicare, Human Resource Development and Medi-Tourism in North East.

The MBBS course was started at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences offers the MBBS course from the session 2008 with and annual intake of 50 seats. The MBBS course is of the duration of 4 years and 6 months as per Academic Calendar of Medical Council of India (MCI), followed by 1 year compulsory rotating internship programe. The course is under affiliation of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong and recognized by Medical Council of India. The MBBS programe commences from the month of August. *The Entrance Examination is held for filling up of 18 (eighteen) seats only under the NE open seats category. For the seats under Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland the respective State Governments nominates their candidates.
CURRICULUM
The curriculum and the Syllabus for the course is prescribed by the Standing Curriculum Committee of NEIGRIHMS (approved by the North Eastern Hill University) and based on the Syllabus as prescribed by the Medical Council of India and as practiced by the rest of the Institutions/Universities.

ELIGIBILITY:

  1. Nationality: Applicant must be a Resident Indian National and Permanent Resident/Domicile of one of the 8 (eight) Northeastern states of India including Sikkim.
  2. The Applicant should have studied and completed their course in the schools located in India in the preceding two years.
  3. He/She has completed age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year M.B.B.S.
  4. The applicant should have passed the qualifying examinations in the manner mentioned below:
    1. The Higher / Senior Secondary Examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination which is equivalent to 10+2 Higher / Senior Secondary Examination after a period of 12 years study, the last two years of such study comprising Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany and Zoology) (which shall include practical tests in these subjects) and with English at a level not less than the core course for English as prescribed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training after introduction of the 10+2+3 educational structure as recommended by the National Committee on Education.
    2. The applicant must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology (or Botany and Zoology) and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Botany & Zoology at the qualifying examination.

METHOD OF SELECTION:

  1. A competitive Entrance examination is usually held during the month of July for filling up of 18 (eighteen) NE open category seats.
  2. All candidates securing less than 50% marks in aggregate in the subject of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English taken together in the Entrance Examination will not be considered for admission to the Institute and their names will not be included in the Merit List.
  3. A combined merit list of all the candidates will be drawn on the basis of their performance in the Entrance Examination.
  4. Inter se merit: In the case of two or more candidates securing equal marks in the Entrance Examination their inter-se merit shall be determined from the marks of the Entrance Examination as follows:
    1. Eliminating first English marks.
    2. If there is still a tie by eliminating Physics marks.
    3. If there is still a tie by eliminating Chemistry marks.
    4. If there is still a tie by eliminating Botany marks.
    5. If the tie is still not broken, then a Candidate senior in age rank senior to a candidate who is junior in age.
  5. Selected candidates will have to  be attend counseling and medical examination at the Institute at their own cost on the notified date. At the time of counseling, candidates will have to attend in person and will have to produce the original Marksheet of the qualifying examination and other original documents mentioned below, such as proof of age, Transfer Certificate, Character Certificate, etc.
  6. To fill the vacancies arising due to the failure of appearance by the selected candidates, sufficient number of candidates from the waiting list will also be called for counseling intimating their merit position in order. Such candidates will have to appear for the counseling on the notified date at their own risk and cost.
  7. Candidates who failed to attend counseling/medical examination on the notified date shall forfeit their claim for admission and placement in the waiting list

The Post Graduate (MD/MS) Courses were started from the session 2009-10. Presently MD / MS courses in NEIGRIHMS are offered in eight specialties - Anaesthesiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology Microbiology, Pathology, Radiodiagnosis, Gen Surgery, Anatomy and Gen Medicine. The duration of the courses are of 3 years. The candidate joining M.D. / M.S. degree course is called Junior Resident (PG). The academic session commences in the month of May of the Academic Year.

  1. Selection is made entirely on the basis of merit in the Entrance Examination. Candidates securing less than 50% marks in the Entrance Examination will not be considered for admission and their names will not be included in the merit list and wait list.

Eligibility

  1. Nationality: Applicant must be a Resident Indian National and Permanent Resident/Domicile of one of the 8 (eight) Northeastern states of India including Sikkim.
  2. Educational: The candidates must possess MBBS Degree recognized by the Medical Council of India and must have completed One Year Internship training. Every student, selected for admission to postgraduate courses shall possess recognised MBBS degree or equivalent qualification and should have obtained permanent Registration with the Medical Council of India, or any of the State Medical Councils or should obtain the same within on month from the date of his admission, failing which the admission of the candidate shall be cancelled.
  3. The candidates who have already done/are pursuing MD/MS in any subject at the time of counseling shall not be considered for admission to MD/MS courses at NEIGRIHMS. If it is found at a later stage that the candidate has given false undertaking at the time of counseling, his/her candidature/registration shall be cancelled.

 

Inter se merit

In case of two or more candidates obtaining equal marks in the Entrance Examination, their inter se merit will be determined in order of preference as under:

  1. Number of attempts in passing all the MBBS subjects. Candiates passing in single attempts/less number of attempts will be preferred.
  2. In case of same number of attempts, candidate obtaining higher percentage of the marks in the final MBBS Examination (comprising of Medicine, Surgery, Obs. & Gynae. and Pediatrics)
  3. If the final MBBS marks are equal then according to age, the older one will get preference over the younger one.

 

Counselling:


Candidates have to appear for the counseling at the Office of the Director, NEIGRIHMS, Shillong on their own expenses. The candidates in order of merit will be called and can exercise their choice of subject according to availability of seats. In case of absentee, the next candidate in merit will be considered. Counseling will be held as per notified schedule

  1. Educational Qualifications: A Candidate must possess a degree in MD or DNB from a University recognized by the MCI in Medicine or Paediatrics.
  2. Age Limit: 35 years as on 1st January of the year of admission
  3. Nationality: Applicant must be a Resident Indian National to be eligible for the open seat and must be a Permanent Resident/Domicile of one of the 8 (eight) Northeastern states of India including Sikkim to be eligible for the NE open seat.

 

Method of Selection

Stage I: 

Written test carrying 80 marks of 90 minutes duration. The question paper will consist of 50 Theory based Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and 30 clinical/practical/lab based Short Answer Questions (SAQs)/MCQs. Each correct (MCQ) answer will be awarded 1 mark and each wrong (MCQ) answer will be awarded one-third (-1/3) negative mark. More than one answer will be treated as wrong answer and awarded negative mark. Zero mark will be given for questions not answered.

Stage II:

Out of the candidates who secured 50% marks or above in the written test (Stage-I), candidates 3 times the number of seats advertised will be called for departmental clinical/practical/lab based assessment (carrying 20 marks). Out of these candidates called for Departmental Assessment, 50% will be from open category candidates and 50% will be from NE open category applicants.

The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences offers the B.Sc Nursing Course. The B.Sc. Nursing is a Baccalaureate Degree Programme of four (4) years, leading to the award of a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The programme is designed to help the graduates acquire a broad based knowledge and to become highly competent professionals who can function as skilled practitioners in different hospital and community settings. They should be able to manage different types of health programmes and be a team leader of Health Care Workers.

Duration of the Course:
Four years including six months Internship Programme as per the academic calendar of Indian Nursing Council.

Affiliation: The Course is affiliated to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong

Total Number of Seats: Fifty (50) seats annually.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission Candidates belonging to all categories seeking admission to the B.Sc. Nursing degree course (Basic) should fulfill the following criteria:-

  1. Should have passed the Senior School Certificate Examination/ Higher Secondary Examination/Indian School Certificate Examination which is equivalent to 10+2 Examination after a period of twelve (12) years of study.
  2. Should secure 45% aggregate or more marks in each of the four (4) subjects i.e., Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English in the10+2 examination.
  3. Should have completed the minimum age of 17 years on or before the 31st December, of the year of admission and not exceeding the maximum age of 25 years as on 31st December, of the year of admission.
  4. Candidates found guilty of misconduct or convicted for any offence shall not be eligible for admission.
  5. Candidates should be a citizen of India.
